Forensic Genetics Fellowship Program (2-year program)

Forensic Genetics Fellowship Program (2-year program)

The Forensic Genetics Fellowship Program is a rigorous two-year program designed to expose the accepted candidate to the wide array of components that fall under the umbrella of forensic DNA testing. Upon completion of the program, fellows will have been trained in all casework methods in exactly the same manner as a staff analyst would be. These methods include forensic serology, state-of-the-art DNA analysis methods, DNA interpretation, statistical analysis and expert witness testimony. In addition, fellows are introduced to the extensive quality systems required for forensic labs and the leadership skills necessary for running a successful lab in a state-of-the-art Forensic Genetics Laboratory, which newly opened in January 2013.

Along with traditional forensic DNA testing, fellows are tasked with furthering the reach of forensic genetics. By partnering with Baylor College of Medicine through attendance at courses such as Human Genetics, Medical Genetics and Molecular Methods, and through work at renowned facilities like the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center, fellows are expected to bring new technologies to bear on forensic genetics. This was demonstrated with the Institute’s first fellow in 2013 assisting with molecular genetic testing of sudden death victims, fast-tracking insect and animal DNA tests, and validating a complex mixture calculator. Fellows are also responsible for furthering the research goals of the Institute by applying for competitive grants.

Program Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or a related physical science.
  • Successful completion of a minimum of nine semester (or equivalent) hours of college coursework in Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology.
  • Successful completion of coursework in Statistics and Population Genetics.
