Tours

In an effort to preserve death with dignity and the integrity of evidence, tours of the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences are conducted by request for organized groups that are either associated with educational and training missions or matters of court.

Tour requests must meet the following requirements for consideration:

  • Medical or nursing school student and faculty groups
  • Law school student and faculty groups
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • Grand juries
  • Attorneys, including those employed by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and the Harris County Public Defender’s Office

Tour scheduling is contingent upon the availability of the Institute. Tours are generally scheduled twice monthly on Thursdays between 9 a.m. and noon, and must be scheduled and planned at least two weeks in advance of your anticipated tour date.

“Saving Our Kids” Program

The goal of the "Saving Our Kids" (SOK) program is to reduce motor vehicle accidents and fatalities by educating teens and their parents about the risks associated with handling an automobile, including:

  • Hazardous driving conditions
  • Exceeding the speed limit
  • Combining alcohol and/or drugs with driving an automobile

Participants in the program receive a one-hour lecture and discussion concerning the dangers involved with driving an automobile presented by Roger P. Milton, Jr., M.D., assistant medical examiner. Since automobile deaths involving teenagers appear to be on the rise in the Harris County area, the program is geared toward teens in senior high school that are new drivers or are contemplating taking a driver's education course. Municipal Courts in Harris and surrounding counties also use participation in the program as a condition of Community Service for traffic offenders.
