A Victim’s Assistant Specialist can provide you with referrals to resources

The days, weeks and even months following the death of a loved one can be exceptionally difficult. It’s hard to know what steps to take next or where to turn for help. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is committed to helping direct family members to local resources to assist you through the grief and recovery process.

If the death of your loved one falls under the jurisdiction of the Harris County Medical Examiner, our Victim’s Assistance Specialist is available to help you. The Victim’s Assistant Specialist can keep you informed concerning the procedures of the Institute and can provide you with referrals to resources that may be available to help you throughout the grieving process.

If you still have questions or need additional information regarding the death of your loved one, you may also speak to a Family Liaison Representative at:   (832) 927-5006

The Family Information Brochure linked below describes some of the first steps you should take following the death of a loved one. It also includes a few of the resources that may be available to you at no cost. The organizations listed in the guide may offer one or a combination of various services, which include burial, financial, legal and/or grief support. This is not an exhaustive list. The Victim’s Assistance Specialist may be able to provide you with additional resources specific to your needs and close to your home. In addition, many local religious organizations may offer similar and/or additional support services.
